Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon red gel food coloring
  • 1 1/2 cups multicolored nonpareil sprinkles


Instructions

  1. Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Beat powdered sugar, granulated sugar, and butter in a stand mixer on medium until creamy, about 2 minutes.
  3. Mix in vanilla until combined.
  4. Add dry ingredients gradually; mix until dough forms a ball.
  5. Divide dough in half.
  6. Return one dough half to mixer; add food coloring and mix until uniform red.
  7. Roll each dough half between two sheets of parchment to 11×9 inches and 1/4-inch thick.
  8. Chill on a baking sheet for 1 hour until firm.
  9. Peel parchment from plain dough; brush lightly with water.
  10. Place red dough atop plain dough; press edges to seal and trim to even rectangle.
  11. Roll tightly from long side into a log; brush lightly with water.
  12. Roll log in sprinkles to coat; wrap in plastic and chill 2 hours.
  13. Preheat oven to 350°F; line sheets with parchment.
  14. Slice log into 1/4-inch rounds; place 2 inches apart.
  15. Bake 11 to 13 minutes until edges are lightly golden.
  16. Cool on sheet 5 minutes, then transfer to rack.
