Description
This is the best apple pie recipe for beginners. It’s easy to follow and results in a delicious homemade pie.
Ingredients
- 1 recipe for double pie crust
- 2 1/4 lbs Granny Smith Apples, peeled, cored (about 7 cups thinly sliced)
- 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 8 Tbsp unsalted butter
- 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg, + 1 Tbsp water, for egg wash
Instructions
- Prepare your double pie crust and chill. Preheat your oven to 425˚F.
- Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and simmer for 1 minute.
- Whisk in water and sugar, bring to a boil, then simmer for 3 minutes. Remove from heat.
- Peel, core, and slice apples. Toss with cinnamon in a large bowl.
- Pour the sauce over the apples and stir to coat.
- Roll out the bottom crust to a 12″ circle and place in a 9″ pie plate.
- Add the apple mixture, mounding slightly. Keep filling from the edges.
- Roll out the second crust and cut into 10 strips. Weave strips into a lattice over the top.
- Beat egg and water for egg wash. Brush the top crust.
- Bake at 425˚F for 15 minutes.
- Reduce oven temperature to 350˚F and bake for another 45 minutes, or until apples are soft and filling bubbles.
- Rest the pie at room temperature for 1 hour before serving.
Notes
- Ensure the filling does not get on the pie crust edges to aid in sealing.
- Bake until the filling is bubbling through the vents for at least 5 minutes.
