Description
A hearty Texas tamale pie featuring spiced ground beef, black beans, and a golden cornmeal topping. This Tex-Mex dish offers bold flavors and comforting textures for a satisfying weeknight dinner.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 can (15 ounces) diced tomatoes with green chilies
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup yellow cornmeal
- 1 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup sliced black olives (optional)
- 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and onion until the beef is browned and the onion is soft, about 6 minutes. Drain excess fat.
- Stir in black beans, diced tomatoes, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes to blend flavors.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together cornmeal, milk, and egg until smooth.
- Spread half the cornmeal mixture in the baking dish.
- Layer the beef mixture evenly over the top, then pour the remaining cornmeal mixture over it.
- Sprinkle with shredded cheese and black olives.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until the top is golden and set.
- Cool for 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with chopped cilantro before serving.
Notes
- You can substitute ground turkey for ground beef.
- Black olives are optional for the topping.
- Allow the pie to cool for 10 minutes before you slice and serve it.
