Description
These soft and chewy sugar cookies are perfect for any occasion, especially holidays. They have a delicious buttery flavor and are easy to make, making them ideal for beginner bakers.
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 12 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 1 large egg yolk, room temperature
- 1 Tbsp. whole milk
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 3 cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
- 1 ½ tsp. baking powder
- ¾ tsp. salt
- ½ tsp. baking soda
- granulated sugar, for rolling and garnishing
Instructions
- Using a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar for about 3 minutes until creamed and light.
- Add the egg, egg yolk, milk, and vanilla. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients at a low speed until just combined.
- Chill the dough for 30 minutes or overnight.
- Preheat the oven to 325°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- If the dough is very cold, let it sit on the counter for about 10 minutes to make it easier to scoop and roll.
- Place about ¼ cup of granulated sugar in a bowl for rolling.
- Scoop about 1 ½ tablespoon-sized balls of cookie dough and roll them in the granulated sugar.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes, being careful not to overbake.
- Cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Garnish with a sprinkle of granulated sugar.
- Store in an airtight container for 3-4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
Notes
- If your cookie dough seems dry after chilling, you can add a teaspoon of milk at a time until it reaches a workable consistency.
- For perfectly round cookies, ensure you roll the dough into uniform balls.
- Do not overbake; these cookies should be soft in the center.
- Freezing baked cookies is a great way to have them ready for unexpected guests or holiday baking.
