Description

These soft and chewy sugar cookies are perfect for any occasion, especially holidays. They have a delicious buttery flavor and are easy to make, making them ideal for beginner bakers.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 12 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 large egg yolk, room temperature
  • 1 Tbsp. whole milk
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
  • 1 ½ tsp. baking powder
  • ¾ tsp. salt
  • ½ tsp. baking soda
  • granulated sugar, for rolling and garnishing

Instructions

  1. Using a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar for about 3 minutes until creamed and light.
  2. Add the egg, egg yolk, milk, and vanilla. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients at a low speed until just combined.
  5. Chill the dough for 30 minutes or overnight.
  6. Preheat the oven to 325°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. If the dough is very cold, let it sit on the counter for about 10 minutes to make it easier to scoop and roll.
  8. Place about ¼ cup of granulated sugar in a bowl for rolling.
  9. Scoop about 1 ½ tablespoon-sized balls of cookie dough and roll them in the granulated sugar.
  10. Bake for 8-10 minutes, being careful not to overbake.
  11. Cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Garnish with a sprinkle of granulated sugar.
  12. Store in an airtight container for 3-4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

Notes

  • If your cookie dough seems dry after chilling, you can add a teaspoon of milk at a time until it reaches a workable consistency.
  • For perfectly round cookies, ensure you roll the dough into uniform balls.
  • Do not overbake; these cookies should be soft in the center.
  • Freezing baked cookies is a great way to have them ready for unexpected guests or holiday baking.
