Description

Mom’s Legendary Tater Tot Casserole. This easy, comforting dish layers seasoned ground beef with creamy soup, green beans, and melted cheese, topped with crispy tater tots. It is a perfect, straightforward meal for any home cook.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (optional)
  • 1 can (14–15 oz) green beans, drained
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar, divided
  • 32 oz frozen tater tots

Instructions

  1. Heat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the ground beef and onion in a skillet over medium-high heat until the beef is browned. Drain any extra fat.
  3. Stir the minced garlic and Worcestershire sauce into the beef mixture. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the cream of mushroom soup and the sour cream, if you are using it.
  5. Fold the drained green beans and 1 cup of the shredded cheddar into the meat mixture.
  6. Spread this filling evenly into your prepared baking dish.
  7. Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of cheddar cheese over the filling layer.
  8. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single, snug layer over the cheese.
  9. Bake for 40–50 minutes. The casserole should be bubbling, and the tots must be deeply golden brown.
  10. Let the casserole stand for 5 minutes before you serve it.

Notes

  • For a heartier dish, add 1 drained can of corn along with the green beans.
  • Bake this casserole on the top oven rack and do not cover it to help the tater tots crisp well.
  • To make an old-school hotdish, skip the sour cream and the cheese added into the meat mix. Just layer the meat, soup, vegetables, then the tots and bake.
