Description
Mom’s Legendary Tater Tot Casserole. This easy, comforting dish layers seasoned ground beef with creamy soup, green beans, and melted cheese, topped with crispy tater tots. It is a perfect, straightforward meal for any home cook.
Ingredients
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1/2 onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup sour cream (optional)
- 1 can (14–15 oz) green beans, drained
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar, divided
- 32 oz frozen tater tots
Instructions
- Heat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Cook the ground beef and onion in a skillet over medium-high heat until the beef is browned. Drain any extra fat.
- Stir the minced garlic and Worcestershire sauce into the beef mixture. Season with salt and pepper.
- Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the cream of mushroom soup and the sour cream, if you are using it.
- Fold the drained green beans and 1 cup of the shredded cheddar into the meat mixture.
- Spread this filling evenly into your prepared baking dish.
- Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of cheddar cheese over the filling layer.
- Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single, snug layer over the cheese.
- Bake for 40–50 minutes. The casserole should be bubbling, and the tots must be deeply golden brown.
- Let the casserole stand for 5 minutes before you serve it.
Notes
- For a heartier dish, add 1 drained can of corn along with the green beans.
- Bake this casserole on the top oven rack and do not cover it to help the tater tots crisp well.
- To make an old-school hotdish, skip the sour cream and the cheese added into the meat mix. Just layer the meat, soup, vegetables, then the tots and bake.
