Ingredients
- 1⅓ cups warm water
- 2 tablespoons instant or active dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 3 tablespoons vegetable or avocado oil
- ½ tablespoon salt
- 1 large egg
- ¼ cup dried potato flakes (optional)
- 3¾ cups bread flour
- ¼ cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
- ¼ cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- ½ tablespoon dried oregano
- ½ tablespoon dried parsley
Instructions
- Combine warm water, yeast, and sugar in a stand mixer bowl. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- Add oil, salt, egg, potato flakes (if using), and flour. Mix on low speed, then knead on medium speed for 6–8 minutes until dough is smooth and slightly tacky.
- Transfer dough to a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled.
- Combine garlic powder, oregano, and parsley in a small bowl. Mix shredded cheeses in a separate bowl.
- Gently punch down dough. Divide into four equal pieces. Roll each into a 10–12 inch log. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Cover shaped loaves loosely and let rest for 20–30 minutes.
- Lightly brush loaf tops with water or oil. Sprinkle with herb mix, then shredded cheeses, pressing gently.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Score shallow slashes on top of each loaf. Bake for 18–22 minutes until golden brown and crusty.
- Cool loaves on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Using bread flour will result in a chewier texture. All-purpose flour will yield a softer loaf.
- Potato flakes are optional but contribute to a softer crumb.
- Ensure your water temperature is around 100°F (37°C) for optimal yeast activation.
- The dough should be slightly tacky, not overly sticky. Adjust flour or water by a tablespoon if needed.
- Allowing the bread to cool completely ensures the crust sets properly.
