Description

Classic American goulash with ground beef, macaroni, and tomato sauce. A hearty one pot comfort meal ready in 40 minutes.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef 85 to 90 percent lean
  • 1 small yellow onion diced
  • 3 garlic cloves minced
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni uncooked
  • 1 14 1/2 ounce can diced tomatoes undrained
  • 1 15 ounce can tomato sauce
  • 2 cups low sodium beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese optional
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce


Instructions

  1. In a large heavy pot over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion for 6 to 8 minutes until browned and no longer pink. Drain excess grease if needed.
  2. Stir in minced garlic, paprika, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well and bring to a gentle simmer.
  4. Stir in the uncooked elbow macaroni. Reduce heat to medium low, cover, and simmer for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.
  5. Remove from heat and let the goulash rest uncovered for 5 minutes to thicken slightly.
  6. Stir in shredded cheddar cheese if using and serve warm.

Notes

  • Cook ground beef to an internal temperature of 160 degrees F as measured with a meat thermometer to ensure it is safe to eat.
