Description

This caramelized onion burger topping is deeply golden, sweet, and savory. A simple stovetop method transforms any burger into a standout.

Ingredients

  • 3 large yellow onions thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons water as needed

Instructions

  1. Heat a wide skillet over medium heat and add olive oil and butter until melted.
  2. Add sliced onions and salt and stir to coat evenly.
  3. Cook for 10 minutes, stirring every 1 to 2 minutes, until onions are softened and translucent.
  4. Reduce heat to medium low and spread onions into an even layer.
  5. Cook 30 to 40 minutes, stirring every 3 to 5 minutes, until onions are deep golden and very soft.
  6. Add water one tablespoon at a time if onions begin sticking, scraping the pan to deglaze.
  7. Continue cooking until onions are jammy and evenly caramelized.
  8. Taste and adjust salt if needed, then remove from heat.
