Description

This caramel apple bread pudding bakes apples and warm spices into a rich custard soaked bread, topped with an easy homemade caramel sauce.

Ingredients

  • 16 ounces day old French bread cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1½ cups heavy cream
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2½ cups apple pie filling
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9 by 13 inch baking dish. Spread the bread cubes evenly in the dish.
  2. Whisk together the milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl until fully combined.
  3. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Gently press the bread down to absorb the liquid.
  4. Spoon the apple pie filling evenly over the top of the bread mixture.
  5. Cover the dish tightly with foil. Bake for 25 minutes.
  6. Remove the foil. Continue baking 30 to 35 minutes until the center is set and the top is lightly golden.
  7. While the pudding bakes, add the butter, heavy cream, and brown sugar to a small saucepan over medium heat.
  8. Cook, stirring frequently, until the mixture bubbles and thickens slightly, about 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  9. Remove the bread pudding from the oven and let rest 10 minutes. Drizzle with warm caramel sauce before serving.

Notes

  • Using slightly dry bread helps the pudding bake up set without becoming mushy.
