Description
This caramel apple bread pudding bakes apples and warm spices into a rich custard soaked bread, topped with an easy homemade caramel sauce.
Ingredients
- 16 ounces day old French bread cut into 1 inch cubes
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1½ cups heavy cream
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 5 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2½ cups apple pie filling
- ¼ cup unsalted butter
- ¼ cup heavy cream
- ½ cup light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9 by 13 inch baking dish. Spread the bread cubes evenly in the dish.
- Whisk together the milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl until fully combined.
- Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Gently press the bread down to absorb the liquid.
- Spoon the apple pie filling evenly over the top of the bread mixture.
- Cover the dish tightly with foil. Bake for 25 minutes.
- Remove the foil. Continue baking 30 to 35 minutes until the center is set and the top is lightly golden.
- While the pudding bakes, add the butter, heavy cream, and brown sugar to a small saucepan over medium heat.
- Cook, stirring frequently, until the mixture bubbles and thickens slightly, about 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- Remove the bread pudding from the oven and let rest 10 minutes. Drizzle with warm caramel sauce before serving.
Notes
- Using slightly dry bread helps the pudding bake up set without becoming mushy.
