Description
These calico beans are hearty, saucy, and packed with ground beef and three kinds of beans. A comforting dish perfect for gatherings or dinner.
Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 medium yellow onion diced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 can kidney beans 15 ounces rinsed and drained
- 1 can lima beans 15 ounces drained
- 1 can baked beans 28 ounces with sauce
- 1 2 cup brown sugar packed
- 1 2 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 2 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 300°F.
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and onion and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, breaking up the meat, until fully browned and no pink remains.
- Drain excess fat from the skillet and set the beef mixture aside.
- In a large oven-safe casserole dish, add the kidney beans, lima beans, and baked beans with their sauce.
- Add the cooked beef mixture to the beans and stir gently to combine.
- In a bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, ketchup, vinegar, mustard, salt, and black pepper.
- Pour the sauce over the bean mixture and stir until evenly coated.
- Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 45 minutes until hot and bubbling around the edges.
- Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
