Description

Learn how to make the best homemade cinnamon rolls with this easy-to-follow recipe. These soft, fluffy rolls are perfect for a weekend treat or special occasion.

Ingredients

  • For the dough:
  • 3 cups all‑purpose flour
  • 1 large egg (plus enough milk to make 1 cup total liquid)
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the filling:
  • ¼ cup butter, room temperature
  • ½ cup sugar mixed with 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • For the frosting:
  • 4 oz cream cheese, room temperature
  • 5 tablespoons butter, room temperature
  • 1½ cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Mix and knead all of the dough ingredients (flour, egg + milk, sugar, melted butter, yeast, salt, vanilla) in a large bowl or stand mixer until a soft, smooth dough forms. Transfer to a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, until doubled.
  2. On a lightly greased surface, roll the dough into a 10 × 16‑inch rectangle. Spread the softened butter over it, leaving a 1‑inch margin on the far edge. Sprinkle the cinnamon‑sugar mixture evenly over the butter.
  3. Starting from the side closest to you, roll the dough into a tight log and pinch the edge to seal. With a serrated knife or dental floss, cut the log in half, then cut each half into 6 rolls (12 total). Place them in a greased 9 × 13‑inch pan, press down slightly, cover, and let rise again for 45–90 minutes until puffy.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes, until golden brown on top.
  5. While the rolls bake or cool, beat together the cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla until light and fluffy—about 1 minute. Spread the frosting over the warm rolls.
  6. Enjoy immediately. Store any leftovers, with the frosting, in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
