Description
Bake tender apple slices with cinnamon and crunchy nuts for a healthy, low-sugar dessert-style snack resembling apple pie without the complexity. Ready in 30 minutes.
Ingredients
- 5 large apples (Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Fuji), cored and sliced
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon sea salt
- ⅓ cup chopped walnuts
- ¼ cup sliced almonds
- 2 tablespoons chopped pecans
- 1 tablespoon coconut sugar or brown sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
- Core apples and slice into ¼-inch thick wedges, keeping the skin on.
- Melt butter in a large bowl. Add honey, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sea salt. Stir until combined.
- Add apple slices to the bowl. Toss gently to coat all slices evenly with the mixture.
- Pour the coated apple slices into the prepared baking dish, spreading them evenly.
- In a small bowl, combine walnuts, almonds, pecans, and coconut sugar. Mix well.
- Sprinkle the nut mixture evenly over the apple slices.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until apples are fork-tender and nuts are lightly toasted.
- Remove from the oven. Cool for 5 minutes before serving warm.
Notes
- Replace butter with coconut oil or vegan butter for a dairy-free option.
- Use maple syrup instead of honey for a deeper flavor.
- Swap nuts for pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds for a nut-free version.
- Add ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract to the butter mixture for more flavor.
- Mix in ¼ cup of dried cranberries or raisins with the apples.
- Top with vanilla ice cream or Greek yogurt for an indulgent serving.
- Choose apples that hold their shape when baked, such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith.
- Store cooled leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
