Description
A delicious grilled cheese sandwich featuring sweet caramelized onions, tart apples, and melted Gouda cheese on toasted sourdough bread.
Ingredients
- 8 thick slices of sourdough bread
- 2 yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 4 Tablespoons butter, divided + extra to butter the bread
- 1 Tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- Salt and freshly ground pepper
- 1-2 teaspoon fresh thyme
- 2 apples, peeled, cored and sliced
- 1 pinch nutmeg (optional)
- 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar (optional)
- 2 cups (150g) gouda cheese, shredded
Instructions
- Melt 2 Tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and cook 5-8 minutes, until softened.
- Add the balsamic vinegar, and continue cooking another 5 minutes, until the onions are golden and caramelized.
- Add the thyme, salt and pepper, and cook another minute. Remove from the heat.
- In a separate skillet, melt the 2 remaining Tablespoons of butter. Add the apples, and cook on medium heat until soft.
- Add a splash of apple cider vinegar and a pinch of nutmeg if desired.
- Butter the outside of each slice of bread.
- Layer the ingredients (cheese, onions, apples) on one side of the bread, and finish up with a layer of cheese.
- Top with the remaining slice of bread.
- Heat butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Place sandwiches in the pan and toast, carefully flipping when perfectly golden brown and cheese begins to melt.
- Cut in half and enjoy.
Notes
- Gouda cheese is recommended, but feel free to substitute with your favorite melting cheese.
- The apple cider vinegar and nutmeg are optional but add a nice depth of flavor.
