Description

This recipe makes soft, fluffy homemade sandwich bread with a lightly sweet flavor and tender texture, perfect for toast, sandwiches, and everyday baking.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 6 cups bread flour, divided

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the warm water and sugar until dissolved. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the salt, vegetable oil, and 3 cups of bread flour. Stir until smooth.
  3. Gradually mix in the remaining bread flour until a soft dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it evenly into 2 portions. Shape each portion into a loaf.
  7. Place the dough into 2 greased 9 x 5 inch loaf pans. Cover loosely and let rise for 30 to 40 minutes until the dough rises about 1 inch above the pans.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  9. Bake for 28 to 32 minutes until golden brown and the loaves sound hollow when tapped.
  10. Remove the bread from the pans and cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • For extra soft sandwich bread, brush the tops with a little melted butter after baking.
