Description

Soft, gooey cinnamon rolls filled with spiced apple butter and topped with a smooth, creamy cinnamon frosting. Perfect for a weekend baking project.


Ingredients

  • Yeast Dough: 1 cup whole milk warmed
  • Yeast Dough: 2¼ teaspoons instant yeast
  • Yeast Dough: 2 large eggs room temperature

  • Yeast Dough: ½ cup granulated sugar

  • Apple Filling: ¾ cup thick apple butter
  • Apple Filling: ¾ cup light brown sugar
  • Apple Filling: 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • Cream Drizzle: ½ cup heavy cream warmed
  • Cinnamon Frosting: 6 ounces cream cheese softened
  • Cinnamon Frosting: 5 tablespoons unsalted butter softened
  • Cinnamon Frosting: 2 cups powdered sugar
  • Cinnamon Frosting: 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon


Instructions

  1. Add the warm milk and yeast to a large mixing bowl and let stand 2 minutes until foamy.
  2. Whisk in the eggs, melted butter, sugar, and salt until combined.
  3. Add 4 cups of flour and mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead 5 to 7 minutes, adding more flour only if the dough is overly sticky.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place about 45 minutes until doubled in size.
  6. Roll the dough into a large rectangle about 24 by 15 inches.
  7. Spread the apple butter evenly over the dough.
  8. Sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon.
  9. Roll the dough tightly from the long edge and cut into 12 equal rolls.
  10. Place in a greased 9 by 13 inch baking dish.
  11. Cover and let the rolls rise 20 minutes while preheating the oven to 375°F.
  12. Warm the heavy cream and pour evenly over the risen rolls.
  13. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until lightly golden and baked through.
  14. Beat the cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and cinnamon until smooth.
  15. Spread the frosting over warm rolls before serving.
