Description

This homemade pie crust is flaky, tender, and easy to roll. A classic grandma style pie crust recipe perfect for sweet or savory pies. Cold fat and gentle mixing create a tender, flaky dough.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter cubed
  • ½ cup vegetable shortening cold
  • ½ cup ice cold water
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar

Instructions

  1. Add the flour and salt to a large mixing bowl and whisk to combine.
  2. Add the cold butter and shortening and cut them into the flour using a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a small cup, stir together the ice cold water and vinegar.
  4. Pour the liquid into the flour mixture and gently stir just until the dough comes together.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and press together gently without overworking.
  6. Divide the dough into two equal discs and wrap tightly. Chill 30 minutes if time allows.
  7. Roll one disc into a circle about 1 inch larger than a 9 inch pie pan and transfer to the pan.
  8. Fill and top as desired, then bake according to your pie recipe instructions.
